Padlet - Collaboration in First Grade

The comprehension unit we've been working on for a while now is questioning. I love getting little readers to really think about what they are wondering as they read an learn. It is such an important skill - to be able to monitor your own comprehension. We have also been working on a science unit "Objects in the Sky", so what better way to get spur natural questions than with space?

Use used Padlet to create a collaborative & interactive work space to record what we know already and what we wonder as we read Douglas Florian's Comets, Stars, The Moon, & Mars: Space Poems and Paintings.

We started with things we knew already. To go quickly, they shared and I demonstrated Padlet by typing what they wrote.

Then, before and after we read several poems from the book, we used our class iPads in small groups to record our questions. They LOVED seeing what they were typing pop up on the Padlet wall on our screen.

Here's our wall ... they come up with some great questions which we are investigating and using to create some student led projects.

If you want to use Padlet as a backchannel or collaboration tool in your classroom Richard Byrne at Free Technology For Teachers has a very thorough tutorial. Click here to see his post.
