Rotten Pumpkin - Icky, Gross & FUN

Last week I shared about how we started reading Rotten Pumpkin: A Rotten Tale in 15 Voices by David M. Schwartz. It was published just recently, so if you haven't heard about it yet, it's a must have!

There were shouts of "EEW!"  "GROSS!"  "I'm allergic to mold!" "What's decomposing mean?" along with face coverings and "She turned the page, it's okay to look now!"

We had so much fun reading and discussing. There are so many opportunities for vocabulary building, connecting, discussing and sharing experiences. This great informational text, with amazing photographs, is written in such a unique style and was truly engaging. We took two read aloud sessions to get all the way through it.

After we finished we delved strait into cutting up a small pie pumpkin, observing it, counting seeds (497 by the way!) and setting it in a big glass jar to start watching it rot.

We have been taking pictures with our iPads each day, then using the iPad app Skitch and our Apple TV (to project the iPad screen so everyone can see) to collaboratively annotate them. We pass the iPad around and take turns adding words and arrows.

We created a diagram of the pumpkin that you can see above, and have been adding the date and labeling the mold we see each day! It's so much fun! Skitch is an excellent tool for this, and is so easy to use!

When we finish I'll share the Haiku Deck that we are creating to track the whole, gross, moldy project!

Here's a sneak peek at what it looked like on Friday ... lots of moisture and mold!
