In order to keep us both excited, and reflective, about our year together my First Graders have been furiously working on creating an anthology. Just the word "anthology" has gotten them excited. It's so much more interesting than just saying yearbook.
We brainstormed a list of all the things we have done this year - our favorite investigations, books, activities, subjects, concepts, songs - anything they wanted to remember.
They each morning this week we have set out with paper and iPads to create. I have LOVED the way our room looks and sounds. There are small groups working all over the place and everyone is spread out with what they need. After a poem is written, we are editing and publishing. I am just in awe of some of the things they have written. It's just been a wonderful way to reflect and see how independent they have grown as thinkers and creators.
Seeing their amazing app smashing skills has me giddy too! On occasion they need a consult about an app smashing plan from me, or a tip on how to make something fit the screen the best way, but for the most part they are so independent. It's thrilling. One of my students even took her work to the 3rd grade poetry slam, and proceeded to teach them exactly how she did it. I got the best compliment from the teacher - that this student was my mini-me!

Background for this one - one of our pet bullfrogs died on Monday. I take extra good care of these guys, but he hadn't been eating and we're just really not sure what the cause was. : (
The student that made this used Haiku Deck (to create a very somber bullfrog image and poem) then used ChatterPix to read it. I couldn't be more blown away by how she captures the seriousness, but also adds some of her personal pizzaz to it.
This great list poem was made with Word Clouds by ABCYa and Tellagami. I love it!
There are so many more in the works, and I think it's going to be an awesome project. We're not 100% sure how we're going to publish them all. Maybe with ThingLink or Book Creator? I'll share the finished product here when we are done.
